Timing Is Everything

ClocksMy white-haired, blue-eyed, 83 years young Mom was finally ready to consider downsizing from her 2,500 square foot home on an acre of land. She’s been living in this home alone since 2008 when Dad went on to be with Jesus.

For years, this idea had triggered an emotional tug-of-war. She would toy with the idea and then dismiss the notion as she considered all the work involved in a move. This decision would mean surrender…moving from her 2,500 square foot home into a smaller space would require letting go of treasures. And this triggered insecurities – she felt safe in her home, surrounded by neighbors who are friends from church.

“Emotional tug-of-war.”

So when she announced 6 months ago that she was meeting with a realtor to explore options, it was a huge step forward for her! For months, the realtor worked diligently to show her available properties and each was dismissed due to location, size, condition, price, etc.

After an exhaustive search with many highs and lows, Mom resolved that she did not have to move and she decided to be thankful for the home she had. We concluded that this may have been God’s purpose all along – for her to recognize the blessings she already had and be truly thankful.

Well, timing is everything.

Within days of Mom’s decision to stay in her home, a friend called to mention a property that would be available – 2 bedroom home for sale by owner. This custom property was built in 2004 to spec for retirees that were downsizing. It could not be more perfect for Mom – large light-filled rooms, ample storage, and friends from church live nearby.

We toured the house on Saturday, immediately made an offer that was accepted on the spot, contingent upon selling Mom’s house. We spent the rest of Saturday staging Mom’s home to go on the market. Suddenly she found it easy to let go of treasures that would not fit in her new home. We moved out furniture in preparation for a moving sale, she purged decades of items – goodbye Willie Nelson 8-track tapes, so long to Dad’s collection of road atlas, tossing VCRs and videotapes, and filled her car with useful household items to donate to a local ministry.

We prayed that God would send just one qualified buyer with no contingency on selling a home. Her home was listed on Monday. She had one scheduled showing for Tuesday evening. She received a full-price offer on Wednesday morning – no contingencies!!

God’s timing is everything. He has worked out all the details.
